All summer long, Rick Barnes and his staff at Texas spent their time looking for perimeter firepower. One of the guys they locked in on was four-star combo guard Eric Davis.
Tuesday night during a ceremony at Saginaw (Mich.) Arthur Hill, the 6-foot-2 senior and No. 52 player in the class of 2015 rewarded the efforts of the Barnes and his staff by announcing that he would be a Longhorn.
"Next year, the University I've chosen to head to is Texas," Davis said as he put on a Texas baseball cap.
One of the best pure scorers in the senior class, Davis has been a steady performer throughout his high school career. After showing up as a ballyhooed freshman, he has retained his status as one of the nation's top backcourt players.
A slick ball handler who uses clever changes of pace, stop and go and hesitation moves, Davis has an outstanding feel for putting the ball in the hole. He is very good at navigating the high ball screen and while he isn't a particularly bouncy leaper, he is able to hang and has outstanding body control that allows him to finish through contact and in tight quarters.
More than capable as a jump shooter, Davis can put up points in a hurry and keeps defenders guessing as he switches between driving and jump shooting. Because he is an adept ball handler, he can also slide over and run a team for stretches.
When he arrives in Austin, Davis is definitely going to have to get stronger so he will become very familiar with the weight room underneath the Longhorns practice facility. Also, because of his size he will likely need to continue to enhance his point guard skills. But, he should arrive on campus ready to think the game at the college level which puts him ahead of many incoming freshman.
The first commitment for Texas from the class of 2015, Davis will likely be joined by another guard before the early signing period ends. As it stands, the Longhorns are targeting in-staters (and top 35 prospects) Kerwin Roach and Jawun Evans to join Davis in the backcourt.
