Matt Sargeant, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Ocean View high school in Huntington Beach, California, is all smiles after the news he recently received. His list of potential schools is not overflowing with high major programs, but one elite level school recently inquired about his services.
“Two days ago, Mike Montgomery from Stanford called and is going to send him an application,” Huntington Beach head coach Jim Harris said. “That’s usually the prerequisite for a scholarship offer, so it looks like that could happen. UCSB is another school that is in the mix.

“Matt took an unofficial visit their and really enjoyed everything about the visit,” he added. “It looks like they plan on making an offer, too.”
It is a mystery as to why other mid-to-high major schools are not pursing the California sharpshooter. His work ethic on the court is one that’s almost unmatched and his feel for the game is second to none.
“Matt is extremely skilled and is really a complete player,” Harris said. “He’s very smart on the court and is a very good ball handler. His greatest gift is his shot off the dribble. He can hit that shot from mid-range or from long-range, it doesn’t matter which.”
While nothing is set in stone, it appears that Stanford is the frontrunner for Sargeant’s services. There is plenty of time for other schools to get involved and he would have no problem listening to what they had to say, but until that takes place, one school is head and shoulders about the rest.
“Unless other schools like Stanford get involved, they’re the team to beat,” he said. “Matt has already taken an unofficial visit to Santa Barbara and he really liked it and enjoyed himself, but he would have a tough time turning down Stanford. His goal right now is to study Law and his academics are important to him. Who knows what will happen in the future, but that’s his plan right now.”
Sargeant will spend the summer traveling with his AAU team, LA Rockfish. They open up later this month in Houston, but Coach Harris wasn’t certain about any other dates, so we’ll have more information later on in the week.
