When it comes to his recruitment, JaJuan Spillman, the 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard from Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, KY., doesn’t have a lot of options right now. Six games into his junior year, Spillman was hoping more colleges would be interested in his services, but that has yet to happen.
“There aren’t a lot of college coaches’ coming around right now,” JaJuan Spillman said. “Louisville is the only school really recruiting me right now, but I’m waiting to hear from more schools. Other schools are recruiting me to play football, but only Louisville is recruiting me for basketball at this time.

“I plan to play football and basketball my freshman year in college,” he added. “My mother and uncle have been very supportative of this decision and we all think it would be foolish to not play both sports during that first year.”
Pleasure Ridge Park Head Coach Dale Maybrey sat down with Spillman and the end of last year and talked with him about improving his skills and ability to score the basketball. At the time, Spillman could slash to the basket and create, but was not much of a threat from the outside.
To his credit, Spillman spent the majority of the summer working on his outside game.
“I feel more comfortable running the point,” Spillman said. “My coaches’ and teammates prefer the ball to be in my hands as well. Last year I was more of a slasher and could create for other teammates, but I really could not hit from the outside.
“Now that I’ve added a jump shot, my game is more complete,” he added. “My uncle and I spent a lot of time after practice and during the summer working on my outside shot and all that hard work is paying off. Like I said earlier, I plan to play football and basketball my freshman year of college, but I believe basketball will be the sport for me in the future.”
Through six games, Spillman has guided Pleasure Ridge Park High School to a 6-0 record and is currently averaging 17 points, 6 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.
