NHSHF: Five-star Smith dominates

HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- The 2014 edition of the National High School Hoops Festival came to a conclusion on Sunday. With many players and teams hitting the floor for a second time, five-star junior point guard Dennis Smith put on a show during his first appearance. To wrap up Rivals.com's coverage of the event we take a look back at Smith's performance and touch on some other subjects from the weekend.

Smith's performance not enough
When it was all said and done, Fayetteville (N.C.) Trinity Christian didn't get the result that it wanted falling to Ft. Washington (Md.) National Christian, 62-58. However, it wasn't for lack of effort from the nation's No. 5 player in the class of 2016, 6-foot-2 point guard Dennis Smith.
Mostly unguardable, Smith nearly carried his team to victory while scoring 35 points (14-25 FG, 6-15 3PT), grabbing three rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording four steals.
Early on, Smith was dialed in from long distance. He kept making pull-up three after pull-up three from deep range. His shot has a lot of lift on it, and once he makes a few of those the explosive athlete becomes even tougher to contain off the dribble. Once Smith decided to start going to the basket, he got where he wanted to go and it became a matter of whether or not he would make or miss the shot because the defense wasn't stopping him.
While the box score shows Smith with only two assists, the number should have been much higher as teammates fumbled away dishes that had set them up for easy looks or simply missed point-blank shots. To the credit of Smith's teammates, they played hard and with lots of energy and started to make shots late when Smith looked to run out of steam down the stretch.
Bottom line, Smith played up to his ranking and remains a strong and explosive dribble-drive performer. He may have settled for a few more deep jumpers than he usually does, but Smith had the look of somebody who was playing under the weather (he didn't warm upand just rested on bench at halftime) and it was pretty clear to see that he left everything on the floor.
In the win, National Christian's 6-foot-9 big man Sylvester Ogbonda was a strong presence. The three-star senior who has signed with Georgia Tech scored 15 points and grabbed a game high 13 rebounds. He is still lean and a bit raw offensively, but Ogbunda has ACC athleticism, size and a tremendous motor.
No. 1 in 2016 remains up for grabs
As things stand, Thon Maker is at the head of the class in the class of 2016. But the No. 1 spot is still very much up for grabs for a variety of reasons. Most obvious is that there is a very good chance Maker elects to make a move to the class of 2015. Even if he stays in 2016, the seven-footer at Orangeville Prep in Canada faces stiff competition, and he is scuffling a bit.
Rivals.com has had the opportunity to watch Maker play for the last three weekends, and in the games that we have seen something has been a bit off. At times he hasn't been aggressive offensively, others he has struggled with turnovers (he had nine of them on Sunday) and at others he has seemed to float in and out of the game. Keep in mind, Maker remains a monster talent, and he and the other players at the top of the heap in the class of 2016 are going to have their games much more closely examined than those further down the rankings.
Coming out of the summer, Maker was moved to No. 1 because of the way he had attacked the basket and played aggressively in the lane on both ends of the floor. He swatted shots, dominated the glass and played with a high energy level. Perhaps he is less than 100 percent healthy, and he is no doubt adjusting to his new surroundings and teammates.
By no means should anybody be worried about him as a prospect, and he will more than likely make a quick return to his old form. But what was already a very tight race for the top spot in the class is 2016 is looking even tighter.
Howard returning to form
Over the summer, Syracuse bound four-star guard Franklin Howard made a return from knee injury but didn't look close to 100 percent. A 6-foot-5 senior at Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI, Howard looked much more like his old self over the course of the weekend.
Most notably, the No. 81 player in the class of 2015 Rivals150 looks to have his confidence back. Howard played like he was sure of the decisions he was making, his athleticism was back and he was making good decisions on the offensive end.
Rivals.com will get to see Howard again before the season finishes, but right now he is looking more and more like a guy who will be able to help out in a variety of roles once he makes his way to campus at Syracuse.
