Evans Commits, Headed to Prep School

Sometimes players are out of sight but they aren’t out of mind. That is the case of Virginia guard Tyree Evans. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard from Richmond George Wythe High School has been quiet since the prep season ended but one major program didn’t forget about him. Evans made a college decision, but first, he’ll have to attend a prep school.
Evans verbally committed to Cincinnati on Monday, according to sources close to the situation. The elite scoring guard, who is the No. 121 player on the Rivals150 for the class of 2004, will take a fifth year at Winchendon Prep (Mass.) before enrolling at Cincinnati.

“I always knew that Cincinnati was the place for me. I’ve known that for the last couple of years,” Evans said. “Things started to pick up like three months ago and I just decided to get the job done with them.”
The Bearcats reeled in one of the top guards in the country. Evans is the third all-time leading scorer in Virginia state history, trailing only Moses Malone and Allen Iverson. Evans scored 884 points last year for a season average of 29.5 points per contest.
Evans is a terrific shooter and can score with ease. He has a great dribble drive that creates space on the perimeter and keeps the defenses honest. Teamed with incoming guard Vincent Banks, The Bearcats will have plenty of offense in the backcourt.
“I feel like I can go in there and do what I got to do,” Evans said. “It’s a big opportunity to be a Cincinnati Bearcat. I just need to go there and play my game.”
Evans has a terrific stroke from deep and those in Virginia believe he’s the best guard to come from the state since Duke’s J.J. Redick. Ironically, Evans broke Redick’s scoring record in the 3A classification - the largest class in the state.
