COLORADO SPRINGS -- The trials for this summer's USA Basketball 16-and-under national team began on Thursday night. Competing for a roster spot is serious business for the 30 or so prospects from the classes of 2017 and 2018 in attendance. Power forward Jordan Brown was at the USA Basketball mini-camp back in October and his experience in the setting showed.
Freshman Brown emerging
Relative to his talent level, Jordan Brown has been undersold. That's not a bad thing either. A member of the class of 2018, the 6-foot-9 four man from Roseville (Calif.) Woodcreek has been allowed to come along at his own pace and without any expectations.
A potential five-star prospect, Brown has a pretty well-rounded game for a young post player. He says he prefers to play from inside out and that was evident Thursday. Brown showed off quick leaping, good instincts and plenty of touch around the rim as a scorer, rebounder and defender. He can run the floor and he is already a pretty capable jump shooter with good mechanics.
Part of the reason Brown is relatively unknown is that he wasn't able to play during the live evaluation periods in April. When coaches can come out again in July, Rivals.com fully expects he will become one of the most heavily recruited players in his class.
Brown has one offer and it is from Nevada. He mentioned that California was monitoring him and that he gotten some interest from Virginia and Wake Forest.
In no rush to start thinking about college, Brown is focused on making the 16U team and he hopes that knowing what is expected of him in the competitive USA Basketball setting can help give him an edge.
"In the fall, we played against the older guys and that really got me more aggressive," Brown said. "It helped me out through my high school season and it got me a lot more confidence. I'm just trying to do the same thing out here."
