Sharpshooting Wertz has Stanford, others tracking his progress

HAMPTON, Va. – College teams can always find room for a prolific shooter, and Trey Wertz fits that description.

Wertz can do more than just shoot, however, which is why a a bevy of high-majar programs, including Stanford, are showing interest in him this spring. Wertz is a do-it-all type of guard that can slide back and forth between the point guard and shooting guard positions on the floor.

A new wave of schools have begun to show attention to the North Carolina native. Missouri, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Virginia have joined Stanford and others in pursuit of the 6-foot-3 senior.

“I am still kind of wide open,” Wertz said.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Wertz broke down a few of his offers and others who remain in contention.

Stanford: “They offer the best of both worlds: It is in the Pac-12 conference but it is pretty much like an Ivy League school out on the West Coast. They really stand out to me and my parents.”

Missouri: “They actually called me this week and said that they watched some film on me and really like my game and that they are going to see me more in July.”

Virginia: “My dad talks to coach (Jason) Williford and Tony Bennett pretty often. They are kind of like preaching that they need scorers to come in and help them get their offense going and feel like I could be someone that helps their offense evolve.”

WHAT'S NEXT

Wertz will finish out his final few months of travel basketball with the talented Team Loaded NC 17-under team on the adidas circuit.

While schools are still entering the picture, Wertz is hoping to narrow things down shortly.

“I will probably try and cut my list down after July and then taking some official visits around when school starts and hopefully get my decision done by the time my school season starts,” he said.

RIVALS REACTION

Wertz is a well-rounded guard who can shoot, distribute, and defend. He is also a high-achieving student, which should bring some of the best academic institutions into the picture. Things remain wide open, though Stanford could be a favorite if it begins to ramp things up with the skilled guard.
