No rush for five-star E.J. Montgomery since Auburn decommitment

If things had gone as planned, five-star big man E.J. Montgomery would be signed, sealed and delivered to play college basketball at Auburn by now. Things don't always go as planned.

Earlier this fall, Auburn assistant coach Chuck Person was arrested for accepting bribes as part of the federal investigation into college basketball corruption. In the wake of Person's arrest Auburn has had to hold out players Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy and Montgomery has decommitted.

According to Montgomery, he had actually been thinking about re-opening his recruitment prior to Person's arrest.

“I was thinking about doing it before that even happened, but that made it easier for me to do it," said Montgomery of Auburn being embroiled in the controversy. "I just wanted to open up my recruitment and experience everything again.”

A big man who can shoot to three point range, run the floor and who has a developing post game, Montgomery has big time potential. The kind of potential that will have college coaches lining up to recruit him this winter.

There has been talk that some programs like North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest and Texas A&M have reached out. Montgomery himself noted a few others that he has seen in the gym and that he's wide open in the process.

“I’m completely open," said Montgomery. "Schools like South Carolina, Clemson, Mississippi State and a few others have been here. A few other big ones have talked to my dad.”

Montgomery's senior season started last week and for now he's focused on putting forth a strong effort in his final high school run. He's yet to set any visits and doesn't appear to be in any hurry to make a move with his recruitment.

“I’m going to wait until the end of the season to do anything," said Montgomery. "I’m open to everybody right now.”
