National programs interested in 2019 Watford

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ranked as one of the top frontcourt prospects in the 2019 class, Trendon Watford backed up the acclaim at the NBPA Top-100 Camp last week. A 6-foot-7 forward who can be used in a variety of lineups, Watford is a major mismatch weapon on the offensive end.

The younger brother of former Indiana star forward Christian Watford, Trendon is firmly positioned as a top-25 prospect in the 2019 class.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

The first day of direct contact from college coaches to the 2019 class, June 15, was busy for Watford.

“I heard from Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio State, Iowa, Alabama, Auburn, Memphis, Tennessee, UConn, LSU, Georgetown, and Indiana,” he said.

Watford spoke about a few of the programs that are currently in the mix.

Alabama: “I love them. As soon as he (Avery Johnson) got there, he offered me when I was in the eighth grade. That was my first offer and we are just staying in contact. We have a pretty strong relationship with all the coaches, even with the one that just came in from Georgia.

“They got a strong class and I think they are preseason top-25. They have a real strong class with (Collin) Sexton, (Herb) Jones, (John) Petty and all those guys. We will just see how it goes.”

Kentucky: “They were just checking on me. I will probably take a visit soon. I already took one back in August but I will probably take one soon. I just talked to the assistant.”

Kansas: “I talked to Coach (Norm) Roberts. He says he is going to check me out in July and we will go from there.”

Indiana: “That is my second home. I have always wanted to talk to coach (Archie) Miller.

“I just want to see the style of play and how he is going to come in and impact the program. It is already a great program but I just want to see what he is going to do.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

Watford will finish out his junior summer with the Nike Team Florida 17-under team on the Nike EYBL circuit.

No visits are set just yet. But as he had stated, Watford would like to visit Kentucky along with a few other local programs in the weeks ahead.

RIVALS' REACTION

Watford is a difficult matchup in the frontcourt, as he has a keen sense of his surrounding. He is the type of forward that can play either the three or the four depending on the lineup that he is placed into.

Kansas, Kentucky and Indiana could be in it until the very end, though this one is Alabama’s to lose.
