Young Gibson Eyeing In-State School

Zach Gibson is a 2005 prospect but a very young 2005 prospect. The 6-foot-8, 190-pound power forward actually played for the Michigan Mustangs’ 16-under team this summer and played very well. Gibson, from Grand Blanc (Mich.) High School, has several offers from MAC schools, but he has his eyes on a Big Ten school close to home.
“Most all the MAC’s have offered,” said Gibson. “But the schools on my list are Michigan State, Ohio State, Kent State, Western Michigan, and Dayton. Out of these schools, Kent State and Western Michigan have offered.”

At the top of Gibson’s list is nearby Michigan State. In fact, Gibson said he would most likely commit as soon as the Spartans offer a scholarship if they choose to do so.
“Michigan State said they would probably offer,” he said. “They have even mentioned redshirting, since I am so young. They are trying to decide what they want to do with their scholarships. It might string out until the Spring, but hopefully they will have it figured out by the Fall.”
Michigan State and the MAC schools have been on Gibson for a while, but Ohio State just started recruiting him after watching him play this summer. Ohio State is one of the schools Gibson is planning to visit in the near future.
“Right now I am trying to work out some unofficial visits,” he said. “I am working out dates with Kent State Ohio State, and Western Michigan.”
Gibson, who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game his junior season, scored 27 points in the adidas Super 64 when Rivals.com scouted him. Many of his points came in transition. He also scored in the low and high post and was active on the boards.
“I can run the floor and catch the ball,” said Gibson about his strengths. “I can also shoot the 15-footer very well. Right now I am working on my post moves and turnaround jumpers.”
Gibson needs a significant increase in strength before he will be ready for high major competition, but he also has the potential to develop into a true combo forward.
