attention from a lot schools throughout the recruiting process. In the past
month though, two schools, Xavier and Texas Tech, started to
separate themselves from the rest of the pack in his recruitment.
After taking official visits to both schools, Gates said he decided on Tuesday
night that Xavier was the best fit for him and decided to become a Musketeer.
Xavier head coach Chris Mack played a key role in securing Gates.
"The coaching staff, Coach Mack is a great coach," Gates said. "I also have a
lot of family in the area. The visit there went really well. It's a small
campus, but it's really nice."
Gates becomes Xavier's first commitment in the 2015 class. Along with Texas
Tech, he had received varying levels of interest from the likes of
Auburn, California, Cincinnati, Georgia,
Georgia Tech, LSU and Missouri. He's currently as a
three-star prospect and comes in at No. 122 in the 2015 Rivals150.
The plan for now is for him to play both forward spots. At roughly 6-foot-7,
Gates will be able to stretch defenses as a '4' man, but needs to get stronger
and tougher to play on the interior.
