Wood emerging on recruiting radar after impressive spring

Outside his home state of Alabama, few people know Diante Wood. If the spring portion of the travel season is any indication, that will change quickly this summer.

Wood, a 6-foot-5 guard from Anniston Sacred Heart Catholic School, is one of the better prospects in the Southeast in the 2018 class.

He recently added an offer from Alabama to go along with offers from Auburn, UAB, Samford and New Mexico State. Georgia and Wichita State are also showing interest in Wood.

IN HIS WORDS

Wood on Alabama: “They had an elite camp and I went up there for it. After camp, they pulled me aside and told me I have an offer from them. I think after another year or two they are going to be really good.”

Auburn: “I think they are a pretty good program. I really like Auburn and I like Bruce Pearl and Chuck Person. I like the way they let their players play. I think they are on the rise too.”

Georgia: “I really haven’t followed them until they started recruiting me, but it seems like a pretty good program.”

UAB: “With Coach Rob [Ehsan] being the head coach, I think they should come along. It might take some time, but I think they will be good. I like Coach Rob being the head coach because he was the assistant coach that recruited me all along. I like him. He’s a pretty good coach.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

Wood will finish the summer playing with the Georgia Stars 16-under, and they will start July by trying to defend their Peach Jam title from last year. After July, look for Wood to take visits throughout the school year, but don’t expect an early decision.

RIVALS' REACTION

Wood admits that Alabama and Auburn have the edge at this point in his recruitment, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Avery Johnson and Bruce Pearl will battle it out over the next year or so to keep one of the more talented prospects in Alabama’s 2018 class from leaving the state.
