Winthrop takes recruiting to the Mattison

Each year, there are a couple of guys who evaluators and coaches want to watch regardless of what level they are being recruited at and whether or not they are available. Fred Mattison is one of those guys. Wednesday night, Mattison took himself off the available list when he verbally committed to play his college ball at Winthrop.
Pound for pound one of the toughest players in the entire country, the 6-foot-6'ish power forward earned himself several admirers this summer while playing with the South Carolina Ravens.

A product of Anderson (S.C.) Westside, Mattison is strong, athletic and really cleans the glass.
"Fred Mattison is a warrior, he never stops working, never takes plays off and is just a great kid on and off the court," said Ravens program director Dion Bethea. "He will be great at Winthrop and in that conference."
