Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith added to his 2015 recruiting class Saturday night when Orlando (Fla.) Evans small forward C.J. Williamson committed while on his official visit.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound three-star recently narrowed his choices to Texas Tech and Virginia Tech and was scheduled to visit Blacksburg next week. Those plans have now been scrapped.
"I can make my own legacy and play for a Hall of Fame coach," Williamson said about his decision.
With his high school teammate Kerry Blackshear's recent commitment to Virginia Tech, plus relationships with several Hokie players, some considered Virginia Tech to have the inside track to landing Williamson, but the Red Raiders' relationships proved to be stronger.
"I have strong relationships with both programs," Williamson said. "Coach (Joe) Esposito has been recruiting me since my 10th grade year and he's someone I can trust."
A versatile player, Williamson could see time at all three perimeter positions. He has great size, sees the floor well, can be a secondary ball-handler and can score at all three levels.
"Coach Smith will push me," Williamson said. "That's what it takes to develop me for the NBA. That's what I grew up around and what I'm going to finish around. Hard-working coaches that will push me to infinity.
