Wiggins storming out of St. Johns, UConn looming

Teenagers change their minds. Doug Wiggins has done just that and he's no longer committed to St. John's, a program where he committed to March. The 6-foot, 160-pound guard from East Hartford (Conn.) High School is now looking at other options and more specifically the UConn Huskies.
East Hartford head coach Anthony Menard told Rivals.com on Monday that his star player is no longer headed to the Big Apple to play for Norm Roberts. Instead, he's re-opened his recruitment and exploring other options, including the in-state Huskies. Menard stressed that Wiggins is not officially committed to the Big East power.

"He has not committed to UConn but he's strongly considering them," Menard said. "Dougie is meeting with coach (Jim) Calhoun this week."
Wiggins, one of the top point guards in the country, saw the goings on with the guard situation in Storrs. A.J. Price is suspended for the season. His future at UConn is up in the air. 2006 stud prospect Ramar Smith and Calhoun parted ways last week due to academic issues.
"I think when he saw what happened with them and Ramar Smith, it peaked his interest," Menard said. "He realized that they may be opening things up and he wanted to look into them. He's a Connecticut kid. He grew up watching them."
Menard said nothing is finalized with Wiggins and the Huskies and that the four-star guard still has a great respect for the Red Storm program.
"He committed to St. John's in large part because he really liked the St. John's staff and he still really likes them," Menard said.
The Huskies are holding commitments from Stanley Robinson, Curtis Kelly, Ben Eaves, Jerome Dyson and Jonathan Mandeldove in 2006.
Last year, Connecticut native Craig Austrie backed out of a commitment to attend UMass to play for the home state Huskies.
