Wichita State transfer Jamarius Burton picks Texas Tech
Texas Tech, faced with a hole in the backcourt, hit on such a mark on Monday. Jamarius Burton, a Wichita State transfer, committed to the Big 12 program, picking the Red Raiders over Marquette, Seton Hall and Xavier.
“Off the bat, I liked the no excuse culture there and everything they do is related to the NBA in regards to how they work out, watch film, eat and train,” Burton said. “I talked to the players and they all had good things to say about it there.”
A 6-foot-4 guard that can play either spot in the backcourt, Burton has two years of eligibility remaining and, as of now, will sit out next year before seeing his eligibility begin with the 2021-2022 season. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Burton has started 52 games throughout his two-year stay at Wichita State. He is coming off a season in which he averaged 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, while making 38-percent of his perimeter tries.
“You also look at the success that they have had with everyone that has transferred into there,” Burton went on to say. “He (Chris Beard) mentioned his success with transfers and also the development piece; that was really big with me. He shared how they develop pros there and how I can develop with my game and physically, as well.”
Texas Tech will lose Chris Clarke to graduation this spring while Davide Moretti enters his senior year in the fall. Jahmius Ramsey will likely leave for the NBA Draft, leaving a hole on the perimeter that Burton may fill if eligible. If not, the Red Raiders will lean on its next blue-chip recruit, Nimari Burnett, and also return a solid group in the backcourt that includes Kyler Edwards, Avery Benson, and Kevin McCullar.
