A native of Washington D.C. who is prepping this year at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy, Kelly picked Wichita State during a ceremony at his school.
"When I first thought about it the distance part was crazy," Kelly told Rivals.com. "I'm the type of person who can't tell anybody no, though. So I couldn't say no without giving them a chance.
"I went out there and I just loved it. It's a city away from the city. My family loved it and they just felt like family."
Standing in the 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-7 range, Kelly is a ruggedly tough player and a great example of a player picking a program that fits his skill.
Kelly likes to make each contest as physical can be, is a very good athlete who chases rebounds and has the skill to make enough jumpers to keep defenders honest. He is in your face and he doesn't back down and he embraces the Shocker motto of "Play mad."
"I'm the type of person who likes to go at it and I'm not going to back down," said Kelly. "Their motto speaks for itself and I think it speaks for me too."
That style should play well in Wichita where the Shockers have developed a reputation for putting players exactly like Kelly on the floor. Kelly also as attracted by their winning.
"It shows you how much they value winning. They were right there last year and could have been in the championship game," said Kelly. "I guarantee we're going to be there for the next few years coming. It is a program on the rise."
Kelly joins fellow three-star Zach Brown in the Shockers recruiting class.
