Welsh growing, on and off the court

It is often said that young big men need to be given more time to develop. Look no further than Thomas Welsh for a prime example.

A rising senior center at Los Angeles (Calif.) Loyola, Welsh looked like a project at this time a year ago. He didn't run particularly well, didn't impact the game as a defender and was quiet offensively. But he always played with great effort and showed off good touch and soft hands.
Now, Welsh has grown to 7-feet and the production is coming rapidly. He is more aggressive offensively, understands how to use his size for position on the glass and he's turned himself into a major prospect.
"I've talked to California probably the most and it's mostly Pac-12 and WCC schools," Welsh told Rivals.com. "The schools that have offered me, if I can remember all of them, are Santa Clara, USC, Arizona State, Portland, Cal, Gonzaga, St. Louis, Pacific, San Francisco and that's all I've got off the top of my head."
Unranked, Welsh is making a push for the Rivals150 in the class of 2014 and his recruitment should take off this summer when coaches see him with the Los Angeles Rockfish. While he's still open, three Pac-12 schools have started to separate from the pack.
"Three that I like a lot the most right now are USC, Stanford and Cal because they have great academics and could be a good fit for me," Welsh said. "But it's still all open and there's not really any favorite I guess, those are just three that I like."
Just like it has taken time for Welsh to develop as a player, he is going to take his time with his recruitment. Rather than rush, Welsh plans to get more background information and would be happy to wait until later in his senior year to make a decision.
"Probably later in my senior year is most likely when I'm going to make my decision," said Welsh. "If the time comes where I'm really confident in a school then I think I would make my decision in the early signing period."
