College programs across the country can officially start their practices this weekend, but it's a relatively light weekend for visits. USA Basketball has many big timers off the road, many programs are prepping for their season-opening Midnight Madness events in the next few weeks and there are only 47 prospects left in the 2016 Rivals150 who have yet to commit. However, that's not stopping N.C. State from having the biggest recruiting weekend of the fall.
Huge weekend in Raleigh
Somebody forgot to send Mark Gottfried and N.C. State the memo that this was supposed to be a slow weekend for visits. Gottfried and the Pack are expecting over 20 prospects to roll through campus at some point this weekend to attend either the football game, check out basketball practice or both.
From the senior class, four five-star prospects will head to Raleigh this weekend. No. 4 overall Dennis Smith is already in the bag and the point guard will be looking to dish up some recruiting magic. Smith's good friend Bam Adebayo (No. 7), shooting guard Rawle Alkins (No. 9) and center Udoka Azubuike (No. 27) are all expected in town.
The expected list of visitors from the class of 2017 is almost as impressive as the 2016 list. Four juniors are expected to come to campus and all of them are four-star prospects. Point guard Matt Coleman (No. 29) will be joined by shooting guard Devontae Shuler (No. 38), power forward Derek Culver (No. 49) and point guard Lavar Batts (No. 105).
Headlining the list of 2018 visitors is top 15 sophomore Rechon Black a 6-foot-6 point guard and he'll be joined by wings Kris Monroe and Qon Murphy.
Finally, a huge group of high school freshman is expected to stop by. Wendell Moore, Trendon Watford, Joey Baker, Keyshawn Langley, Kobe Langley, D.J. Burns, B.J. Mack, Juwan Gary, Christian Brown and J.C. Tharrington have indicated plans to visit.
More key visitors
Louisville and Miami are the only two programs other than NC State that are scheduled to host five-star senior visitors this weekend. Louisville will play host to power forward T.J. Leaf while the Hurricanes will make their pitch to local star big man Dewan Huell. The Cardinals will also play host to four-star 2017 point guard Davion Mitchell and Miami will also have four-star senior point guard Tyson Carter on campus.
Swingman Braxton Key (formerly Braxton Blackwell) looks to be nearing the end of the process. The four-star forward who is spending his senior season at Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill returns to his hometown of Nashville to visit Vanderbilt. Four-star center Schnider Herard will take his third official visit when he heads out to Purdue. After visits to Mississippi State and Texas Tech, he'll still have upcoming visits to Kansas and California.
Speaking of California, they host four-star combo forward Vance Jackson. Jackson visited Connecticut last weekend and should be about ready to make his choice after tripping to Cal. Another four-star who is close to making a decision and making his final visit is Jordan Bruner. The slender power forward has already visited Yale and this weekend he'll see his other finalist, hometowm Clemson.
Other members of the 2016 Rivals150 expected to take weekend visits include three-star wing Jalen Johnson, point guard Justin Moore and power forward Mitch Lightfoot. Johnson is scheduled to trip to Tennessee, Moore is headed to Tulane and Lightfoot will see St. John's.
LSU will host junior college four man Marlon Jones while Louisiana Tech hosts one of the country's best athletes in three-star forward Adrio Bailey. One of the better remaining scorers in the class of 2016, shooting guard Jakolby Long, visits Iowa State while hard nosed and tough wing Tim Cameron will trip to UTEP. Creighton will play host to combo guard Devonte Green and Appalachian State hosts Dondre Griffin
Rivals150 visitors from the class of 2017 include point guard Elijah Landrum who will visit Oklahoma and four-star combo guard R.J. Nembhard who will visit Oklahoma State. Wisconsin is expecting two ranked players in combo forward Goanar Mar and Justin Smith while four-star point guard Paul Scruggs is slated to stop by Indiana.
