Weekend preview: Pangos loaded again

Over the past few years, Dinos Trigonis has grown the Pangos All-American Camp into an absolute must stop on the grassroots circuit. Pangos annually pulls in many of the West Coast's best players and has established more national reach. This year is no different and the projected lineup for the 2012 edition this weekend gives us plenty to watch for in Long Beach, Calif.

Point guards run the gamut

If point guards are your thing, then Pangos is the place to be this weekend. Not only are there several quality point guards expected to be in attendance, but there will be several different style lead guards.

Sometimes it's the small guys who have the biggest heart and it will be fun to watch sub-6-footers such as class of 2014 floor generals Damontrae Jefferson and Parker Jackson-Cartwright. From the class of 2015 Terrance Phillips, will be looking to make a name for himself.

If it's a point guard who is major threat to score that you covet, Pangos has those covered as well. Class of 2015 prospect Marcus LoVett had a huge freshman year and will get a chance to show non-West Coasters what he can do. Kansas commitment Conner Frankamp is a high-scoring sharp-shooter and Florida's Solomon Poole is a big-time athlete and slashing scorer.

The group Rivals.com will really be focusing on is the big point guards. Arizona's Jaron Hopkins has seen his stock skyrocket this spring and he'll get a chance to prove he can run the point in front of a national audience. Texan Kendal Harris is a physical lead guard and Philadelphia's Rysheed Jordan is one of the best penetrators in the country. Their ability to run the show gets questioned and with every other type of lead guard in attendance, they'll have a chance to shine.

The younger brothers

They aren't a twin duo, but Denver Nugget Jordan Hamilton's younger brothers Isaac Hamilton and Daniel Hamilton are the nation's top brother duo not named Aaron Harrison and Andrew Harrison.

A 6-foot-4 shooting guard, Isaac ranks No. 11 nationally in the class of 2011. He's got a pure jumper with deep range, is adept at creating open looks and plays the offensive end of the floor with a high degree of skill.

Class of 2014's Daniel is a 6-foot wing who ranks No. 19 nationally in his class. Unlike his older brother, who is a cold, calculating and measured player on the offensive end, Daniel is more of a whirling dervish of arms and legs as he drives to the rim. He's long, very quick and has been rapidly developing.

Though they play together at Bellflower (Calif.) St. John's Bosco, the duo plays on separate summer teams (Belmont Shore for Daniel, Dream Vision for Isaac) so Pangos will be a good chance to see them together.

Status of January

Thanks to a big senior season, Anthony January moved all the way to No. 63 in the final 2012 Rivals150. However, the 6-foot-8 forward from Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft has decided on a year of prep school.

Reports from those who have seen him this spring have been very good and he is an intriguing prospect because of his length, athleticism and inside/out versatility.

We'll be looking to see how his game has progressed and whether he's made any decision on which prep school he'll be attending, along with which schools are after him the most.

Who will break out at Pangos?

Every year, there are at least a few players who come from a little off the radar to make a big impression. Although some of these guys are already fairly well known, here are some players who currently sit outside the rankings that could make a big impression at Pangos.

Penn State worked hard to get an early commitment out of Brandon Austin. Now, the 6-foot-6 small forward from Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep will get his chance to show what he can do on a national stage.

There's been a nice buzz coming out of Detroit about small forward Vince Hunter over the past month or so and we'll be looking to check on that.

Others that could be poised for a breakout weekend include class of 2014 Arizona big man Payton Dastrup, versatile Nebraska forward Akoy Agau, North Carolina athlete Tyrone Outlaw, Nevada face-up four-man Hunter Myers and Kansas City scorer Martez Harrison.
