Waters Not Rushing to Decision

Montavius Waters isn’t in a big rush to make a college decision. The 6-foot-3, 195 pound guard will play out his senior season at Westover (GA) HS and doesn’t mind waiting either. He’s just sifting through the schools that are serious about him.
While many players are taking official visits and commitments are being made on a daily basis, Waters is sitting back, watching it all pass by. He won’t take any official visits until the end of the season. It’s a move that he says will pay off in the end.

“It’s about loyalty. I want to see who is serious and who will stick with me throughout the year. If I can help their program, then they can wait for me,” Waters said. “Plus by waiting it’s a good situation to be in at the end of the year. You get to see who is where and what school fits me the best.”
The University of Georgia program recruited Waters so strongly before the off court issues, he would have been a future Bulldog. But things changed, putting UGA back to an even plain for him.
“If the old staff were still there, I would have verballed early to them. Coach Harrick is just a laid back guy but when it comes to game time, he’s all business,” Waters said. “I like the new staff too. Coach Felton is a down to earth guy.”
Two ACC schools have also been in the mix.
“Clemson is really picking up and Florida State has been recruiting me since my sophomore year,” Waters said. He’s taken an unofficial visit to Tallahassee and liked what he saw. He cited the coaching staff as one of the main things he liked about the Seminoles.
Furman and South Florida are also in the running and both schools are trying to schedule in home visits. Waters, who will be retaking the SAT on October 11, said all five schools are coming to Albany to watch him at Westover’s practices.
When he sits down with his parents and coaches, they will discuss the benefits of each program. For Waters his requirements are simple.
“I want to be at a place where I feel like I’m at home. If you are comfortable, you’ll play better,” he said. “I’m still wide open. I want to wait to the end of the season before I make a decision. I think a lot of coaches know that.”
Waters is a gritty guard that has the capabilities of playing both guard spots. He has a nice frame and uses the dribble to create for both himself and teammates. He’s a solid perimeter shooter and is working to improve his range.
“I’m a warrior. I just try to give everything I’ve got at the end of those 32 minutes. I just want that ‘W’” he said. “I’m working on my jumper from deep. Like 20 to 25 feet out. I just want to be unconscious from out there. It comes from upper body strength and that’s something I’ve been working on too. I’ve added eight pounds of muscle.”
