Washington, others interested in three-star Zegarowski

LOS ANGELES – Marcus Zegarowski, the half-brother of NBA guard Michael Carter-Williams, is hearing from a coach who recruited is brother to Syracuse.

Mike Hopkins, who left Syracuse to become head coach at Washington, is reaching out to Zegarowski to see if he can pull the three-star out of New England and get him to Seattle.

“He just tells me that I am a true point guard and that I can hit the three-ball and that I am real tough. He likes that,” Zegarowski said.

Standing at 6-foot tall and with an excellent intellect and feel for the game, Zegarowski is a pure point guard. He can score in a variety of ways but, when placed around quality scorers, the New England native goes to work setting his teammates up for easy looks at the basket, all of which has piqued the interests of several college programs.

Penn State, Pittsburgh, UMass and Rutgers are also involved, in addition to Washington.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Zegarowski discussed the top schools that are recruiting him.

Washington: “Coach Hopkins, he recruited my brother, Michael (Carter-Williams), so I have known him for five-plus years now. Every time that I see him, it is like family to me. It is kind of weird him recruiting me but, at the same time, it feels good."

Penn State: “I know Tony Carr, who is a point guard there; he is tough. Plus, Coach (Pat) Chambers is there; he texts me every other day and calls me sometimes. I have begun to build a really good relationship with them.”

Pitt: “They text me every single day and they really like my game. They got a new coaching staff this year so I will definitely look out for them plus, my teammate, Terrell Brown, he committed there, so he is already recruiting me a little bit.”

WHAT'S NEXT

Zegarowski will finish out the remaining few weeks of his travel career on the Nike EYBL circuit this summer with the Expressions Elite 17-under group.

When it comes to selecting a program, Zegarowski has an idea how he hopes for things to play out.

“Once school is over, I definitely will take some visits to some of the schools that I mentioned,” he said. “After August comes around, I will talk about cutting my list and go from there.”

RIVALS REACTION

A sturdy point guard that can run his team from day one, expect for more schools to begin to pursue Zegarowski in the weeks ahead.

At the time being, Washington has a unique sell thanks to the past rapport developed between Zegarowski and Hopkins. UW may be the sleeper through it all, though Pitt, Penn State, Rutgers and UMass have just as good of a chance thanks to their proximity to the efficient playmaker.
