Junior point guard Howard Washington spent his first two years of high school basketball playing at Canisius in Buffalo, New York, but the competition he faced wasn't great. Over the summer, he made the decision to leave home and finish his high school career playing at Montverde Academy in Florida, and it's already paying off for him in terms of his recruitment.
The four-star lead guard says he hears regularly from Ohio State, Wake Forest, George Washington, Indiana, Miami, Syracuse, UAB and Stanford.
Many think that if the Orange extend a scholarship offer to Washington, his recruitment might end pretty quickly. Washington has admitted as much in the past, but now Syracuse appears to have some competition if they hope to sign him.
"I probably like Ohio State, Wake Forest, we'll see what happens with Syracuse, and Indiana the most right now," Washington said.
Ohio State has put in a lot of time with Washington to date, and having a former Duke point guard on staff has helped their cause with him.
"Coach [Greg] Paulus, he's a former high Division 1 guard that can relate to me a lot. The coaching staff there is also great. It's a very guard-oriented offense."
Wake Forest is a newcomer to Washington's recruitment and have certainly caught Washington's attention.
"I like the whole coaching staff. I can relate to them. I like their coaching staff. I'm pretty close with Doral Moore now, who is going there. We've talked about it a little bit. It's definitely another option."
The only school Washington has visited since moving to Florida is Miami, and the Hurricanes decided to offer him while he was on campus.
"I talk to them a lot. They offered me on my visit there. It was nice. I like the Florida weather. They have a nice campus. I like the coaches a lot. They seem really cool."
Like Wake Forest, Indiana is new to Washington's recruitment, but their success under Tom Crean is intriguing to him.
"My AAU coach has been talking to them, but I haven't a lot of contact with them. They have been good the last couple years. I like their offense and how they run a lot."
Washington is obviously a talented basketball player, but he also gets the job done in the classroom, which is why Stanford is now involved in his recruitment.
"That's definitely an option. Both academics and basketball are good there. The one thing their coach said to me is he'll guarantee I make six figures if I graduate from there just because of the education you get."
Washington is starting to come up with a plan for how he wants the recruiting process to play out for him.
"I'll probably wait until after the season to do anything. I should have a better feel for everything by then. I'll probably commit sometime in the middle of AAU season or after. It could be August or September."
