Walker drawing major attention

They weren't all there to see five-star guard Jabari Bird. They weren't even there to see five-star 2014 forward Justise Winslow. And they weren't there to catch five-star 2015 center Ivan Rabb, either.

No, the recruit Division I coaches flocked to see last week in San Diego at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic was a blossoming forward prospect who's slid under the high-major radar for perhaps too long: 2015 wing Cameron Walker.

A four-star prospect by Rivals.com, heading into the weekend, Walker's offer sheet consisted of school such as San Diego State, UC Irvine, Fresno State and Cal Poly. About midway through the Christmas week, Walker was drawing coaches from Oregon State, Washington, California, Arizona, San Diego State, USC, Stanford.

And when the weekend concluded, he added Rice and Oregon State offers to a recruiting list that is bound to blow up soon.

"I've been in the weight room a lot to improve my strength in my upper body and lower body too," Walker said of the improvement in his game. "I work on my ball handling a lot because I know I'm going to have to handle the ball up the floor. So I've been working on that a lot and my jump shot -- keep working on that, too."

A 6-foot-6, 185-pound forward, Walker is a long and athletic wing who can score, rebound and dunk with authority. He repeatedly posted 20-point games at the Holiday Classic last week, including a 32-point show in front of several key coaches.

After seeing that, and considering his potential, it's clear he's going to be a hot commodity within the next year or two -- something he's ready for.

"I like the process a lot," Walker said. "Right now it's not as crazy as people say it is, but as I get older it's going to get more and more crazy. I'm going to sign a little bit early because I'm going to get tired of schools contacting me."

Walker has already taken six unofficial visits to Stanford, SDSU, Fresno State, Cal Poly, Pepperdine and UC Irvine. The two schools that are standing out most out of those early on are Stanford and SDSU.

"Stanford, I like Stanford a lot," Walker said. "I like the campus -- the campus is beautiful. And they have such a high academic standard.

"I like San Diego State because it's kind of like a college town and there's a lot of students there and they're interested in basketball."

But Walker is in no rush to make a decision. He's raking in the offers, taking his visits, and will eventually set up a plan for a college choice when the time is right.

"I'm happy with what I'm getting recruited by right now," Walker said. "I'm not going to take that for granted. So I'm just going to keep working on my game and hopefully more schools will recruit me."
