Jay Wright and Villanova got their weekend started off right on Friday when top 25 junior big man Omari Spellman announced his commitment.
The 6-foot-9, 270-pounder from Springfield (Mass.) Macduffie tweeted Friday morning that he has committed to Villanova.
The news was confirmed by Munch Williams, the program director of Spellman's summer team the PSA Cardinals. Williams sees a bright future for the No. 24 player in the class of 2016.
"I think he's going to be really good in the Big East," Williams said. "He's going to be there with a ton of good guards and anytime you are playing with a bunch of good guards, its going to make it easier on you as a big man to show what you can do."
Big and strong, Spellman is a quick leaper who scores with either hand near the rim and does a good job cleaning the glass. He can also step out and make a jumper, which could make him very dangerous early in the Big East.
"He can move around the court a lot offensively," said Williams. "I think Jay Wright and his staff are going to play to his strengths. He can make some three-pointers, he can block some shots and he can play some five.
"He could be one of the better big men in the Big East and I think he will be ready to play right away."
The first player to commit to Villanova from the class of 2016, Spellman was hooked not only on the Wildcats' plans for him on the court, but how they will work to prepare him for his future off of the court.
"I think the part he liked the most about Jay Wright and his staff was the community that they created," Williams said. "The network that they have after basketball is big. The showed what they can do for him after basketball and in life to make sure he has after school success as a man and not just a basketball player.
"The staff did a great job of recruiting him as a unit, everybody was involved, and everybody bought in to Omari Spellman and his family."
