Utah has big 24 hours

The last 24 hours have been quite kind to Larry Krystkowiak and his staff at Utah. On Wednesday, they landed a commitment from athletic shooting guard Naseem Gaskin and on Thursday the school announced the signing of class of 2017 shooting guard Devante Doutrive.

It had been expected that Doutrive would need to go the junior college route in order to qualify academically, however the NCAA cleared him late and it's a huge boost to the Utes.

Though it's likely he will redshirt for the 2017-18 season, Doutrive has the tools make a major impact in Salt Lake City. He's a big, strong and tough driver who gets to the rim and scores at will. He is dangerous from mid range and is just good enough as a three-point shooter that defenses have to respect him out there which opens up driving opportunities.

Krystkowiak and his staff have made a habit of maximizing the abilities of relatively under-the-radar prospects and Doutrive looks to be the type of talent who is right up their alley to get the most out of.

Though not as polished or physically punishing as Doutrive, Gaskin comes along with upside as well.

A product of Oakland, Gaskin is a slender and explosive athlete who has a tremendous first step. He's at his best in transition where he can fly to the rim for buckets and he's also really dangerous attacking off of the baseline. As a shooter he is most comfortable as a spot up guy versus an off the dribble jump shooter.

Because of his tremendous length and quickness, Gaskin should be able to defend multiple positions. Also, given his explosive first step, he's a guy that the Utah staff could eventually explore using for stretches at the point as he solidifies his ball handling and decision making.

With the additions of Doutrive and Gaskin, there's no question that the Utes have strengthened their backcourt.
