USC lands four-star guard

For the second time in the class of 2016, Andy Enfield and USC are on the board with a Rivals150 backcourt player.
This time the Trojans get a four-star prospect as Jonah Mathews made the call to stay home.

A 6-foot-3 shooting guard at Santa Monica (Calif.), who currently ranks No. 96 in the Rivals150, Mathews saw many advantages at USC.
"I live in Los Angeles and USC is close," Mathews told Rivals.com. "They are in the Pac-12, they are a great school and they are close to my family."
Of course it wasn't all about location for Mathews. Enfield and his staff really struck home with their message that he could be a big part of putting USC basketball back on the map.
"It was a hard decision between my three finalists," said Mathews. "Gonzaga is a great school and so is San Diego State and they both go the tournament every year. Coach Enfield pitched me that they are a program on the rise and I want to be one of those kids that when they talk about USC down the road they will say that he was part of the turnaround."
One of the best shooters on the West Coast, Mathews is a mature player who leads by example and with his words on the court.
"I can bring leadership," said Mathews. "I'm the leader of my high school team right now and I can shoot. I can work on the mental aspect of the college game, the speed and strength I will need."
Mathews will also have an advantage in knowing what is expected of him and people in his corner. His father, Phil, was a longtime Division I coach and is currently the head coach at Riverside City College. His older brother, Jordan, is getting ready to start his junior season at California.
"Not a lot of kids can say that their dad has coached basketball for 40-plus years," said Mathews. "That's rare. He's really helped me through high school and AAU. He and my brother will be able to help me through college."
Mathews joins his California Supreme summer teammate De'Anthony Melton, a Rivals150 combo guard, and three-star big man Harrison Henderson in the Trojans' recruiting class.
