USA BBall: 2020 Xavier Foster has tools to be a priority big man recruit

COLORADO SPRINGSXavier Foster may be the next high-level player out of the state of Iowa. He's certainly showing the potential for that at the USA Basketball 16U National Team tryouts.

The state of Iowa is no basketball wasteland, but the 6-foot-9 Foster knows he'll have to prove himself if he wants the big-time schools calling.

"A lot of the big-name basketball schools are in states where they have a lot of talent near them so they don't come to Iowa as much," Foster said. "I know we aren't considered a basketball state, but we have some guys that can play and have proven that."

Iowa and Iowa State have both offered, along with Creighton. Foster also is aware that he can make a name for himself by staying local.

"I've been to Iowa and Iowa State," he said. 'They are cool and have had some local players do really well."

What may be most intriguing about Foster is his mobility and ability to shoot the ball with range to the three-point line. Through the first few days of tryouts his shot hasn't dropped as much as he would like, but he's impressed in other ways.

"I'm having trouble shooting the ball, I don't really get why," Foster said. "But my coach is really happy with me for defending the rim. He said he's way happier with me doing that than he would be with me making a three-pointer."

After USA tryouts, Foster is looking forward to finishing the summer with his Pure Prep team and he's leaving all the early recruiting duties up to his father.

"He talks to the coaches and keeps track of my Twitter and things like that," he said. "Sometimes I check out some things on Twitter but mostly he handles it."
