USA Basketball: Oubre has plenty left

Day 1 Reports: Morning | Afternoon
COLORADO SPRINGS -- The 2013 USA Basketball Developmental National Team October minicamp came to a conclusion on Sunday evening. After a morning session that saw the 2014 players spend a lot of time split up from the 2015 and 2016 players, the event ended with the 2014 guys scrimmaging against -- and dominating -- the younger players. Kelly Oubre finished strong while 2016 five-star Jayson Tatum had a great day as well.

Not because he isn't good, but because we wondered if the Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep wing would have any legs left after playing on Saturday with next to no sleep. If the 6-foot-7 southpaw was tired, he sure didn't show it as he finished the weekend strong. Huge dunks in transition, silky looking jumpers and a nice assortment of off the dribble attacks for scores, Oubre did it all. The five-star wing was arguably the weekend's top performer. Here to view this Link. got better. A mind-numbing athlete with ridiculous explosiveness in the open court, Woods showed improved skill. He looks improved off the dribble, he is coming along as a shooter and he is learning to harness and control his athleticism instead of being totally reliant on it and thus out of control. Woods is more of a combo guard than a point guard, but regardless of how you want to label him, he was productive. Here to view this Link.. The 6-foot-6 wing has an electric first step and explosive leaping ability. Jones was playing well above the rim all day Sunday and was in attack mode. While not yet a real creator off of the dribble, Jones does get to the rim quickly with one or two power dribbles when he sees an opening, and he is a competent three-point shooter. Here to view this Link. of Huntington (W.V.) Prep was a favorite of evaluators, Team USA coaches and other players in attendance. At 6-foot-9 he has long arms and is really starting to fill out through his shoulders. He came up with lots of loose balls, played with physicality and tried to punish the rim whenever possible. He did it with a big smile on his face and a motor that never quit, making him a lot of fun to watch and play with. Here to view this Link. validated his standing as a top-five player in the class of 2016. The product of St. Louis (Mo.) Chaminade looks to have grown to a legitimate 6-feet-7, and he is really filling out physically. Tatum made plays off the dribble, was all over the glass and broke out a highly effective post game while looking like one of the most well-rounded players in camp regardless of class. He defends, finishes in transition, can make some jumpers and doesn't seem to make any mistakes. Here to view this Link. finished strong. The seven-footer still needs a little more consistency and some fine tuning of his footwork, but he certainly has some tools. He has soft touch, excellent length, very good hands and what we noticed on Sunday is that he is also pretty explosive off the floor. He is well on his way to five-star status and looked like a potential top 15, maybe even top 10 overall player in his class.
