USA Basketball: Five-star Trent down to three

Gary Trent (Garrett Ellwood/USA Basketball)

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Five-star shooting guard Gary Trent has one visit down and two to go before he makes his college decision.

With his UCLA visit out of the way, he's got trips to Duke and Michigan State later in the month but before he takes those visits the 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Napa (Calif.) Prolific Prep is putting in some work at USA Basketball.

Through three sessions, Trent has been one of the most aggressive and physically tough scorers and has mixed his drives and jump shots. The No. 13 ranked player in the senior class talked about how his recent move from Minnesota to Prolific Prep has been beneficial.

"The biggest different is the basketball aspect, it's on a whole nother level," Trent told Rivals.com. "I almost want to compare it to USA Baksetball. Every drill and every practices pushes you to your limits. There's a lot of other great players and there's adversity that you have to deal with."

When Trent gets back to Prolific Prep from USA Basketball, it will be time to lock in on a decision. He discussed each of his final three and started with a recap of his UCLA visit.

"It was great. I enjoyed myself," said Trent. "I was showed around by T.J. Leaf and Lonzo Ball. They are great guys and great basketball players and i was glad that they were able to show me around and what they University has to offer.

"Coach Alford says that I can have an impact right away and that if I just come out and play hard things will go well."

For a while now, Duke -- where he visits October 20-22 -- has been considered a behind the scenes leader. Trent still maintains that all of the schools are even but said that Mike Krzyzewksi sees him as an immediate impact guy.

"Coach K thinks I can help carry the scoring load right away. He thinks that I'll be ready and won't have to be eased in. He thinks that they can just throw me out to the Wolves and I'll be fine."

Likewise, Tom Izzo thinks Trent could make an immediate impact at Michigan State.

"Coach Izzo thinks I'm a guy that can help them out in a variety of ways," said Trent. "He's saying that I can come in and make a big impact. He wants me to be ready and to not have to ease me into it. He thinks my physicality matches their style."

According to Trent, he would like to have a decision in time for the early signing period but he doesn't have a set timetable for announcing his decision. Also of consideration is a potential package deal involving he and five-star center Wendell Carter and if that's to happen, Duke is the only school they have in common.

"That's the only school we have together so it's either we are going to play there or we won't play together," said Trent. "At the end of the day we have to do what's best for our families and if we don't play together we are still going to be friends and our families will still be close. There's a lot going into it."
