UMKC lands key target

The month of April has been pretty good to Kareem Richardson. He was named the new head coach at UMKC, then won a title as an assistant coach at Louisville before finishing things off by landing a pair of very important targets.
Two days after landing three-star junior college shooter -- and Kansas City native -- Frank Williams, Richardson and his staff found their point guard.

During an official visit to his hometown school, three-star point guard Martez Harrison of Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewser Prep popped for the Kangaroos.
"I think the whole situation and getting to talk to coach a lot over the last month or so was a big part of it," Harrison told Rivals.com. "Being able to come in and play right away and being at home was a big plus along with the new coach and new staff.
"They are trying to turn the program around and I can be a part of that."
A high-scoring lead guard during his high school career at Kansas City (Mo.) University Academy, the 5-foot-10 floor general has always played with plenty of fire. During his year at Brewster, though, he really rounded out his game.
"I think this year gave me a lot of experience as far as being away from home and getting adjusted," Harrison said. "The whole experience was great and I think it prepared me."
For years, UMKC has struggled to recruit the Kansas City area. They have landed some locals, but it has been a struggle to get KC kids excited about the program. Adding players such as Harrison and Williams could change that.
"I think that is very big for us," Harrison said about the new staff getting off to a strong start locally. "That is one of the things coach talked about with me today. I think with Frank committing it caught some eyes and with me committing it will get some people looking.
"I think kids will see us committing and it can be real big for us as far as recruiting the city goes."
Harrison has a short turnaround ahead of him. He'll head to Brewster to finish classes and will be back home within a few weeks. He's ready to get to work.
"As a freshman I think what I bring to the table is great leadership and playmaking ability," said Harrison. "It will be a quick turnaround because of me and Frank and to help other guys get better and lead them in the right direction.
"I think I need to improve with getting a more consistent jump shot. Other than that coaches love my game and say even though I'm a little raw once I get that jump shot I'll be good."
