THE RIVALS150: Class of 2014 - Class of 2015
When Steve Alford got the job at UCLA there were questions about whether he could recruit at a high enough level. Those questions should now be answered if they weren't already.
In 2014, the Bruins hauled in a class that looks to be playing at a level that will have it rise from its current No. 17 spot. On the heels of an outstanding first class, Alford and the Bruins have already landed a significant commitment from the class of 2016.
Wednesday night, Lonzo Ball, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Chino Hills (Calif.) High, committed to the Bruins according to multiple sources close to the situation.
The No. 20 player nationally in his class, Ball is a big and dynamic guard.
One of the flashier players in the class of 2016, Ball is a deft ball handler who has no reservation about pulling up from 28 feet and making shots. He is a very alert passer and really sees the floor.
Because of his size -- and he may be pushing 6-foot-5 -- Ball is a weapon as a passer against a zone because he sees over the top of it and keeps his head up dribbling in transition, which means he doesn't miss open teammates. Like any sophomore, Ball does have to get a bit stronger and must learn to have consistent effort, but his talent and upside are huge.
Ball is UCLA's first commitment from the class of 2016. Currently a four-star prospect, Ball will be in the mix for five-star status before his senior season.
