Tyler Newbold makes college decision

Payson (Utah) High School shooting guard Tyler Newbold made his college decision tonight, picking Utah State over an offer from Wyoming.
“I committed to Utah State. I’m really excited because I’ve always wanted to go there,” Newbold said. “I called the staff and let them know today. It just seemed like a great fit for me.

“I feel really comfortable with the coaching staff and I know that I can trust them. They were on me before my junior year and they have stuck by me the whole time. They did a good job of recruiting me.
“Coach (Don) Verlin recruited me and we have a great relationship. Coach (Stew) Morrill is an up-and-coming head coach and I see big things from his program. He’s a good coach and he’s got them headed in the right direction.
“I also like that they are going to be in the WAC. It’s going to be a competitive conference that has some high profile teams. Also, I love the town because it’s such a great college environment.”
However, after his senior year Newbold, 6-foot-6, 190-pounds, will see his college career put on a brief hiatus.
“I’m going on a two-year church mission after high school so I won’t play college basketball until I get back,” Newbold said. “I’m really excited about that and it will give me the chance to mature physically and get ready for college basketball.”
Last year Newbold, who sports a 3.8 GPA and 22 ACT score, averaged 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists per contest.
