PHILADELPHIA – Five-star Jahvon Quinerly has begun the final steps toward a college commitment. With one official visit to Arizona already in the books, the talented lead guard has two other trips in the works.
Known for his Kyrie Irving-like handles and scoring acumen around the basket, Quinerly has narrowed his list of finalists down to seven: Seton Hall, UCLA, Arizona, Stanford, Virginia, Villanova and Kansas.
He took his first official visit to Arizona in June.
“It was a great visit. Allonzo Trier was my host. I got to explore the whole campus and get a good feel for it,” he said. “It was a great visit. I was able to get closer with the coaching staff and meet some of the players there that I would be playing with.
“They’re telling me just to come in and be the point guard. Me and Brandon Williams, we would be on and off the ball. We both like playing off the ball.”
Quinerly grew up with and is best friends with five-star center Naz Reid, and the possibility of the duo playing together in college remains on the table.
“We definitely think about it every so often. We are seeing Kansas together, I don’t have the official date just yet, but me and him, it could happen,” Quinerly said. “We are used to winning and we come from winning programs. We are like best friends off the court and being able to play together at the next level would mean a lot.”
IN HIS OWN WORDS
Quinerly spoke briefly on a few of his other finalists.
Villanova: “It is just a winning program. I come from a winning program from my high school and travel program. At the next level, I definitely want to win, which is going to be a main factor with me.
“Jalen Brunson is going to be entering the draft next year. Their pitch is just to put the ball in my hands and they already have a good 2018 class.”
Kansas: “I don’t know much about Kansas but me and Bill Self, we are starting to build a relationship, that is why I want to go and see that school, me and Naz together.”
UCLA: “I would have the ball in my hands and would have a great recruiting class.
“It is in the middle of the hottest part of L.A., the spotlight is there.”
WHAT'S NEXT?
Quinerly will likely visit Kansas with Reid in September, and sources confirm that he will take an official visit to UCLA in early October. He has a tentative timetable in place for a decision.
“I want to see sixty-percent of the schools on my list for an official visit,” he said. “I will probably commit before my high school season.”
RIVALS' REACTION
A ready-made, high-level point guard, Quinerly has plenty of options when it comes to making his college decision.
It seemed as if Arizona had the chance to end things early fresh off of Quinerly's visit to campus in June, but things are now trending toward a fall commitment. UCLA, Kansas and Villanova have begun to pick up steam with the Jersey product.
