Two favorites for Goins

Melvin Goins, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound point guard from Christian Life Center in Humble, Texas, started his final AAU season in the spring from the sidelines. He could start his senior season as a prospect committed to a high-major school.
The electric and athletic point guard never suited up in the spring because of a broken arm he suffered before the April evaluation events. The Dallas native was the biggest cheerleader for his Dallas Mustangs club and the only player on the bench with a steel plate in his fore arm.

His opportunity came in July where he shined at the Denton Shootout and a strong showing in Las Vegas at the Big Time tournament. Since then, his recruitment has been busy.
Goins said he is holding offers from Iowa State, Louisiana Tech, St. Louis and Nebraska while Virginia, Wake Forest, Boise State and Ball State are also showing interest. Goins said Iowa State and Virginia are his top two programs going into the high school season.
"With those schools, it's just you know that they need want you and not just need you," Goins said. "They need a guy at my position and that can play right away. Both schools are in big time conferences and that really sparked my interest. The Big 12 and ACC, you can't beat that."
Goins will officially visit Iowa State on Aug. 31 for the Cyclones' Thursday night opener against Toledo on the gridiron.
"Coach McDermott and I have talked a lot before but it will be nice to get to know him even more there on the visit," Goins said.
A decision could come sooner than later and Goins said he intends on signing a letter of intent in November.
