Top Schools Pursue Tony Allen
HUTCHINSON, Kan. --
Tony Allen isn't one of those players you rigidly try to classify by position, but the 6-4, 200 pound swingman can do a lot of different things on the basketball court.
You need a scintillating athlete? Allen can soar with the best of them. How about a three point bomber? Allen can fit that bill too when his shot is ripping the twine. How about an offensive rebounder? Did we mention that Allen can be absolutely relentless on the offensive glass?
Allen has been one of the top players in the tournament thus far, averaging an eye-popping 21.5 points and 12 rebounds per game in an explosive 6-4 package.
Of course, none of this comes as a complete surprise, since Allen was a highly regarded recruit out of high school in Chicago and was a dominant force last season for Jayhawk West stalwart Butler County C.C. of Kansas.
Despite running into some issues at Butler which resulted in him not returning to the Kansas junior college, Allen hasn't skipped a beat since returning to the Land of Lincoln. He averaged 13.5 points and 4.9 rebounds this past season for Wabash Valley, which finished 30-4 on the way to a second straight District IV Title.
His inspired play hasn't gone unnoticed by major college coaches. Wabash Valley Asst. Coach Jesse Watkins told JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com that Kansas State, Clemson, Minnesota, South Carolina, Arizona State, Auburn, Creighton, Illinois-Chicago and Cincinnati are all interested in Allen.
Watkins said that Allen is likely to narrow his list over the next two weeks before taking some official visits and making a spring decision.
Kansas had shown some interest in Allen earlier this March, but Watkins said they are no longer looking at the jumping jack from the Windy City.
"I really don't know happened with them [Kansas], but they were looking at Tony real early, and then all of a sudden backed off a little bit," Watkins said.
Of course, some have questioned Allen's attitude for some of his past difficulties, and others aren't sure if he will graduate on time enough to enroll at a Division I program in the fall.
But there's little denying that Allen is an explosive talent who will be counted on to help Wabash Valley defend its title this week.
You can be sure that JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted on Allen's play and recruitment in the coming days and weeks, so stay tuned!
