College basketball programs love recruiting point guards that are winners, so that explains why Alterique Gilbert is such a hot commodity in the class of 2016. He started off his high school career by winning state titles his first two years before taking a tough loss in the quarterfinals this year as a junior.
UConn, the reigning national champions, just recently extended a scholarship offer to the four-star point guard.
"It's a great program," Gilbert said. "Their success speaks for itself. Over the last 15 or 20 years, they have had a ton of good point guards and they fit my style of play. Coach (Kevin) Ollie being a former point guard is a bonus. Ricky Moore was a point guard too."
Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Maryland, Miami, and Texas A&M also have offered Gilbert and stay in constant contact. Gilbert only found time to take one visit this basketball season and that was to see nearby Georgia Tech take on the North Carolina Tar Heels.
"It was cool. It was a good experience to see them play in person."
Illinois has been making an interesting pitch to the Georgia native.
"It's a good program as well. They set a lot of ball screens. They actually set the most ball screens in the NCAA. I like their program a lot."
Texas A&M assistant Amir Abdur-Rahim is a Peach State native and is hoping to go home to find the Aggies' future floor general.
"I talk to Coach [Billy] Kennedy an Coach Amir a lot. They have a good team. I like their point guard a lot, Alex Caruso. I study him. He's different than me, but I try to pick up on things he does."
Gilbert says both in-state schools still have his interest.
"Georgia is looking good. Georgia Tech is kinda struggling, but that's a tough conference. It's big for Georgia to make the tournament. I'm definitely looking at things like that. They have a great staff and a great team. I'm very interested in Georgia."
He doesn't know when exactly he'll be ready to pick a school, but he's got a pretty good idea of what he's looking for in a program.
"I'm not really sure when I'll commit. I might do it early in the summer or late in the spring. I'm at looking at the school's style of play. I definitely want to win. I want to go somewhere I can develop."
