Top performers: Atlanta heats up in second July live period

Naji Marshall ()

ATLANTA – For the second live period of July, there wasn’t a better place to be to see more players than Atlanta. The Under Armour Association Finals drew the most attention, but there were three other quality events in the metro Atlanta area as well. Here are the 10 players that stood out most in Atlanta this weekend.

1. NAJI MARSHALL

Recruiting wrap: Xavier, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Rhode Island and Pittsburgh were the schools he said are recruiting him the hardest.

Performance: The four-star small forward is just a very productive player. As a scorer, he gets the majority of his points attacking the basket and finishing or going to the free throw line after drawing contact. He’s a much better shooter than this time last year, but still needs to improve. He’s great on the boards and also a very good passer.

2. JEREMIAH ROBINSON

Recruiting wrap: Early offers from Creighton, Kansas, Kansas State, Wake Forest and Washington.

Performance: In the second half of the 15-under championship, it was Robinson who led the way for KC Run GMC. He snatched up every rebound in his area. He’s a tough finisher inside, but he’s also versatile enough to play out on the perimeter. He has the look of a highly ranked player in the 2019 class.

3. NAZ REID

Recruiting wrap: John Calipari and Chris Mullin were regulars at Reid’s game this weekend. Rutgers, Seton Hall and many more watched the five-star big man as well.

Performance: Like Robinson, Reid had a dominant second half to help Sports U win the 16-under championship at the Under Armour Finals. He showed off his ability to step out and hit three-pointers to start off his dominant stretch, but then he proved to be too big and athletic for anybody on Team Rio to stop inside.

4. ANTHONY MACK

Recruiting wrap: Added an offer from Memphis and interest from Cincinnati, Georgia and Rhode Island this weekend. Indiana, Virginia Tech, St. John’s and Northwestern also showed interest after last weekend to go along with the 17 mid-major offers he held coming into July.

Performance: Mack’s two best performances of the weekend came in his first two games. On Wednesday night against KC Run GMC, he went for an impressive 25 points. His best game came Thursday morning when he dropped 29 points and helped the South Jersey Jazz defeat the Houston Defenders without four-star guard Myles Cale. His shooting will get the most attention, but he’s a very complete offensive player overall.

5. SAVION FLAGG

Recruiting wrap: Holds offers from Baylor, Florida, Georgia Tech, Houston, Miami, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Performance: The 6-foot-7 small forward is just an effortless scorer. When he decides he really wants to get a bucket, he’s probably going to make it happen one way or another. Overall, he didn’t have his best game against the South Jersey Jazz, but he’s still a very impressive prospect.

6. SCOTTIE LEWIS

Recruiting wrap: Had Kentucky, Syracuse, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Maryland and others tracking him this weekend.

Performance: The 6-foot-5 guard will likely be ranked among the top players in the country at his position in the 2019 class. He’s a very talented player with a natural ability to score, but he’s also a top-notch competitor. He competes on both ends of the court, and seemed to thrive off being matched up on 2018 five-star Gerald Liddell on Wednesday night.

7. DEVON DOTSON

Recruiting wrap: Florida State, Memphis, Providence and USC are the most recent offers. They join a list that includes Clemson, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, NC State, Tennessee and Wake Forest.

Performance: Dotson played a big part in helping Team Charlotte reach the semifinals of the Under Armour Finals. He controls the game as a point guard, but he’s also a very gifted scorer. He did a really good job balancing those roles this weekend. He had his best showing in the second half of the semifinals when he helped Team Charlotte come back from down 20 to take a lead late behind his 29 points.

8. MALIK WILLIAMS

Recruiting wrap: Williams mentioned Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue, Georgetown, Xavier, Louisville and Michigan as the schools recruiting him.

Performance: The 6-foot-10 power forward is going to thrive in the new era of basketball where players at his position need to be comfortable playing on the perimeter offensively, while also being able to protect the rim at the other end. The No. 35 player in the 2017 Rivals150 does both very well – well enough to potentially make a lot of money playing basketball at the highest level someday.

9. EJIKE OBINNA

Recruiting wrap: Clemson, Florida, Temple, Virginia Tech and Xavier were the schools Obinna said are recruiting him hardest. He’s visited each school.

Performance: Obinna knows exactly what he is as a player. He’s a big, strong post player at 6-foot-9 that does his best work on the block. Matched up on Williams on Wednesday night, the No. 126 prospect in the 2017 Rivals150 used his power to score in the post. He has very good footwork and soft touch around the rim.

10. HUNTER TYSON

Recruiting wrap: Offers from Tennessee, Appalachian State, Charlotte, Elon and Davidson. Clemson, NC State, Virginia and Florida have shown interest.

Performance: In the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the Best of the South, we saw Tyson go for 28 points in a big win for PSB Select’s 16-under team. He’s a 6-foot-5 wing with an elite stroke from three-point range. He also showed some toughness attacking the basket.
