Top junior has several schools in the mix
The question is not who is recruiting Greg Monroe, it is who isn't recruiting the 6-foot-10 forward from Harvey (La.) Helen Cox. UConn coach Jim Calhoun and assistant Andre LaFleur had a chance to see Monroe up close and personal Friday night as the Huskies prepared for their Saturday evening matchup at LSU.

Monroe, the top-rated player in the 2008 class by Rivals.com, scored 19 points in Helen Cox's 56-52 victory over Karr. Last season, Monroe averaged 17 points, 11.8 rebounds and seven blocks per outing.
All the big guns are recruiting him. UConn, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, Louisville, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Texas and others are in the mix for Monroe's services.
"Without a doubt, Monroe is talented enough to excel in any system," national recruiting expert Jerry Meyer said. "But Monroe's mobility and ability to either fill a lane on the break or push the ball up himself makes him especially dangerous in an up-tempo style of play. One of the best things he does is ignite the break with the dribble and execute the diagonal bounce pass to a teammate for an easy bucket."
Here is Rivals.com analyst Justin Young's take on Monroe, a left-hander who was one of the top performers this past summer at the Nike All-America Camp. Young grouped Monroe with Kosta Koufos, Donte Green, Patrick Patterson and Delvon Roe as the top players at Nike.
Young: "Like Green, Monroe is showing he can beat teams both inside and out. The New Orleans native came into the camp with high expectations and a big-time reputation. He didn't disappoint and certainly lived up to the hype that has followed him around this season.
"Monroe spent a good amount of time facing the basket and looked comfortable out to the elbows. He will knock down a 3-pointer here and there, but does his best work driving to the basket and scoring 12 to 15 feet away. There is a fascination with big men that run the floor well, and those that can handle the rock like a guard. Monroe does both. What's not to like about that?"
There has been a countrywide search in the 2008 class for the top player. Monroe did enough at the Nike All-America camp to make a very strong and convincing argument. He has raised the bar. How he finishes the month out says a lot about him and what kind of player he really is."
Update on Nate Miles: UConn commit Nate Miles, a 2008 commit, has once again transferred schools. This time he has landed at Humble (Texas) Christian Life Center Academy. Miles had been enrolled at San Antonio (Texas) Cornerstone Christian but said there was a falling out after he verbally committed to UConn on Nov. 19.
Miles said South Kent and American Christian (Tyreke Evans' school) were two other possible destinations. He started his high school career at Toledo (Ohio) Libbey and then had a short stint at Oak Hill Academy before returning to Libbey. Miles then transferred to Cornerstone Christian.
UConn beat out Baylor, Kansas, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Kansas State and a number of other top programs for Miles' services. He will suit up with Christian Life Center at this weekend's Flyin' To The Hoop tournament in Dayton, Ohio. Two of his former schools – Oak Hill and Cornerstone Christian – are also in the tournament.
"I shoot it, pass it, I can do it all," Miles said at the Hartford Civic Center when he committed after the UConn-Ole Miss game earlier this season. "No telling where I'll be (with my skills) two years from now. I know you won't find too many players better than me. Everybody will see it this year."
