Tony Key, a 6-10 freshman center from Los Angeles City College in Los Angeles, Calif., was serving a suspension at the recent Riverside C.C. Holiday Basketball Tournament.
"He has been suspended indefinitely, and when I want to reinstate him, I will," said L.A. City Head Coach Mike Miller. "He missed some team meetings that he had to attend."
Key, a native of Russellville, Ky., put his name in the NBA Draft last summer but was not picked.
"He can play two years in junior college, but from what I understand, he has no Division I eligibility," Miller said. "He comes under a different jurisdiction than a guy who is already in a Division I school."
Rules allow for an undrafted college player to return to college as long as that player did not sign with an agent. There is no such escape clause for high school seniors, since they do not fall under the NCAA's guidance until the enroll at a member institution.
Miller said that two NBA teams have been in this season to see Key, who is a tremendous physical specimen, albeit a bit raw when it comes to putting up consistent offensive numbers.
"He would have to overseas or to the NBA," Miller said. "Or one of the development leagues."
The NBA scouts who have seen Key have come away intrigued.
"They like his potential," Miller said. "He has good hands and he is a pretty good athlete for a guy that big, but he has a ways to go."
JUCO Junction/Rivalshoops.com will keep you posted on Key's status over the next two years, so keep it here for the latest.
