Seagoville (Texas) High School has been a stopping place for college coaches pver the last four years since the days of current Texas Longhorn LaMarcus Aldridge. In the class of 2006, Derrick Roland and Donald Sloan have kept the coaches coming. After making it to the regional finals for the last two years at the high school level, Roland said he's learned a lot about his game as well as the game of recruiting.
"I learned more about leadership and I know this year I'll be a captain so more people will be looking at me," Roland said. "I learned a lot about recruiting too after being with LaMarcus."
That knowledge is being put to use now for Roland. He has narrowed his list to three suitors, Texas A&M, UNLV and Arizona State. Roland said all have offered scholarships.
While he didn't know the exact dates for his official visits, Roland said he'll definitely get to each of the respective schools in September and October.
"All of them have made good improvements and all of them have good coaches," Roland said. "You look at the job Coach (Billy) Gillespie has done at A&M and you can see that they are getting better. Same thing with UNLV. And then with Arizona State, they like to use their guards. Actually, all of those schools are guard based. I feel like I could play my best at those schools."
While on the visits, Roland said he'll be looking at a couple of things before making his decision.
"I'm going to be looking at how the coaches are and how they treat their players," Roland said. "Then I'll be looking at playing time my freshman year. I want to play right away."
Roland is the No. 81 ranked player in the class of 2006 and the No. 17 ranked shooting guard overall in the country.
