Three-star power forward Derrick Walker was originally a member of the 2016 class, but decided to re-classify and move back to the 2017 class in hopes of improving his options in his recruitment. The decision appears to have paid off.
After playing with MoKan Elite during the travel season and now playing at Sunrise Christian in Kansas, he’s added a few offers from power conferences in the past couple weeks. Tennessee and Georgia offered after watching him last week and St. John’s offered not too long before them. TCU, Iowa State and SMU are also in the mix for Walker, who has already taken official visits to Oral Roberts, Ball State, Akron and Illinois-Chicago.
IN HIS OWN WORDS:
Walker talked about some of the schools from power conferences that recently offered or showed heavy interest.
Georgia: “They said they want me there. I’ve talked to all of their coaches. They all hit me up at different times. I like them a lot. They seem like good people.”
Tennessee: “Same as with Georgia. All their coaches call me and text me. I know a little bit about them. I know they are in the SEC and have a great head coach.”
TCU: “They are moving in the right direction there. I talk to one of their assistant coaches a good bit.”
St. John’s: “They are getting better. They are moving in the right direction with their new coach. They have a couple guys that can really score.”
WHAT’S NEXT?:
Since he’s already used four official visits, Walker only has one left to use before making a decision. Right now, it looks like Tennessee will get that visit, but other schools will be fighting for it. Unofficial visits are still a possibility as well. Walker did say he wants to get the recruiting process over relatively soon.
RIVALS’ REACTION:
If Walker is leaning any direction right now, he’s certainly not tipping his hand. He says all the schools involved are even right now in his mind. He plans to sit down with the people helping him out with the recruiting process soon to sort out the pros and cons of each school. The school that gets the final official visit should be in prime position to land Walker.
