Three programs involved early for 2020 five-star Cashius McNeilly

COLUMBIA, S.C.Cashius McNeilly has already taken ahold of the point guard position at Huntington Prep as just a sophomore. The 2020 prospect and native Canadian discussed his emerging recruitment and the transition to Huntington Prep.

“It is going all right. It has been a little tough just getting used to all the guys but coach (Arkell) Bruce is a cool coach," McNeilly said. "He isn’t into screaming and is more understanding.”

IN HIS OWN WORDS

McNeilly discussed the three programs that are primarily involved in his recruitment.

Wisconsin: “They started recruiting me after the AAU season and they came up to Canada to my school to check me out. I saw them last year whenever they beat Virginia Tech. I think that I can play there. They all can shoot and are very tough.

“They are interested in me but want to wait on offering me because they don’t really offer too early with anyone.”

Maryland: “I went on an unofficial visit over the summer there. They said I am the next big-time Canadian there. The campus is tough. They have like a mall inside the school and everything.”

Virginia Tech: “My uncle (Jamie McNeilly) is there but he just said that we are here if you want to come but there is no pressure in having to go there.

“I just think that their guards have really improved. They don’t really recruit big men but Nickeil (Alexander-Walker) has just said it is hard work and tough but that he really likes it there.”

WHAT'S NEXT?

McNeilly is settling into his sophomore year at Huntington Prep this winter as the lead guard for coach Arkell Bruce’s bunch. No visits are set, as his last trip was taken to Maryland during the summer.

RIVALS' REACTION

A playmaking guard that has suited up for his Canadian junior national team on the international circuit, McNeilly’s upside remains sparkling thanks to his improved shooting abilities, passing skills and versatility on the defensive end.

He now holds eight scholarship offers as Maryland and Wisconsin are two that could remain heavy suitors until he commits. Virginia Tech sits as the top contender thanks to the employment of his uncle on staff, Jamie McNeilly, and the 2020 guard’s friendship with former travel teammate, Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
