The immediate future of Silvio DeSousa

Watching Kansas this year, there is real optimism that Bill Self can achieve his second national championship. However, during its loss to Washington earlier this week, frontcourt depth, or lack thereof, became a glaring weakness for the Jayhawks, something that could be answered by the pending enrollment of 2018 five-star commit Silvio De Sousa.

A 6-foot-9 power forward by way of Angola that is suiting up for IMG Academy this winter, news began to spread last month that Kansas could attempt to enroll DeSousa in the coming weeks. Following his team’s win on Saturday, his coach, Sean McAloon, discussed where things stand. “He really just needs to get the score right now,” he said. ”If he does, he will sit down with his host family and have a discussion to talk about the pros and cons of either decision.

“He just took the exam a week ago or so. It usually takes two or three weeks to get the scores back and then he has to take the finals and then make the decision to go or not. It is a big decision but either way, we will all support him.”

What does DeSousa bring to the floor? He is a walking double-double that rebounds, finishes and runs the floor. His ball skills have rapidly improved and so has the range and consistency on his 17-foot jumper, a big man that can play alongside Udoka Azubuike but also a small ball 5-man.

The immediate future of Silvio DeSousa and the fate of the 2017-2018 Kansas Jayhawks is pending the final scores of the SAT exam. If all goes well, DeSousa could be suiting up for KU by the end of the month and thus, giving Bill Self an immediate interior cog that could create for a more versatile lineup in Lawrence.
