Texas big man hoping to decide in August

When it comes to off-season training, Kelly Lawson is getting out on the fields with the football players at his Pearland (Texas) High School this summer.
The 6-foot-7 forward is leaving the shoulder pads and helmet alone but still getting his hands dirty with the guys that shine on Friday nights in the Lone Star State.

"I'm doing a strength and conditioning thing with the football team and I'm trying to get stronger," Lawson said. "We've got the tires and the big blocking sleds and everything. They wanted me to play receiver but I said no.
"I know I'm not the tallest or most athletic player out there so I have to get an advantage some how. I know that if I work hard and get stronger, that's only going to help me."
Lawson is putting in the work to show he can play at the next level, he said. The big man hopes his hard work pays off when coaches can watch him during the live period in July.
"I want to commit sometime in August so in July I have to show up and show all of the coaches what I have," Lawson said.
Stephen F. Austin and Tulane have offered him to date while Wichita State, Missouri State, Texas A&M, Lehigh and Rutgers have shown interest.
