Leondre Washington made the decision earlier this school year to transfer to Teaneack (N.J.) High School after spending time at Roselle Catholic. Despite having to miss the early part of the season while his transfer was approved, the move has paid off for Washington, a 6-foot point guard in the 2017 class, as he’s averaging 22 points, 5 assists, and 6 rebounds on a team that is 21-6 as the playoffs approach.
His recruitment has also picked up lately. Rutgers, Temple, USC, Virginia and Wake Forest are some of the bigger programs involved while San Francisco, Towson and Quinnipiac are also in the mix. He’s already unofficially visited Rutgers, Temple and USC.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
Washington spoke about some of his visits and schools he’s interested in.
USC: “I loved it out there. It was great. The whole campus is surrounded by trees and there is a lot of diversity. It felt like home to me.”
Rutgers: “I loved Rutgers too. The coach, Coach [Steve] Pikiell, he’s a good guy. They have great facilities, a really nice locker room, and the campus is huge.”
Temple: “They aren’t on me too hard. They have Alani Moore, so they have been hot and cold with me. I went and visited and really liked Coach [Fran] Dunphy. He’s a good guy. The college is in the city and I liked that.”
Virginia and Wake Forest: “Virginia, I talk to them a lot. They send a lot of letters. Wake Forest isn’t so much anymore. I love Virginia’s program. I love that they preach defense first because that’s what I like my team to be about.”
Washington: “I’m really interested in Washington, but I haven’t talked to them yet. I like their offense. They use a lot of pick and rolls and it seems like they play freely.”
WHAT'S NEXT
Washington said he wants to finish out his senior year before really moving along with the recruiting process. Once his season is over, he’ll start to plot out official visits. At this point, he doesn’t have any visits lined up. Look for his recruitment to be wrapped up by the end of April if all goes as planned.
RIVALS REACTION
Washington is really hoping to hear from the Washington Huskies. He made it very clear that would be one school he wouldn’t need to spend much time considering if they decide to get involved. Beyond that, Rutgers and USC certainly made a strong impression while he toured their campuses. If Virginia becomes serious, the Cavaliers would also give him a lot to think about.
