Just when it looked like the door was closed on any leftover recruiting drama at the top of the 2015 class, five-star big man Caleb Swanigan decided to throw
everyone a curve ball.
Sources have confirmed to Rivals.com that the 6-foot-8 post player from Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Homestead has rescinded his commitment to Michigan State and re-opened his recruitment.
ESPN's Jeff Goodman first reported the news.
The No. 19 player in the senior class, Swanigan had already surprised once with his initial pick of the Spartans. On the day of his commitment --
less than a month ago -- to Michigan State, the Spartans and Purdue were told to expect Swanigan to pick California despite Purdue's perceived momentum in the days leading up to his announcement. So to see Swanigan re-opening after this much time has passed is certainly a bit unexpected, but not altogether surprising.
Swanigan has yet to make any public comments about backing away from Michigan State, but the rumor mill has kicked into high gear. Early word from sources behind the scenes is that Matt Painter
and the Boilermakers are back in the driver's seat for the five-star prospect. Swanigan has been on campus several times and his legal guardian Roosevelt Barnes is a Purdue graduate who played sports for the Boilers during his time in West Lafayette.
No timetable has been set for a decision now that Swanigan is off the market. Cuonzo Martin's California Bears have to be taken as serious threats to land a commitment but, at least for now, Purdue appears to be the team to beat but Swanigan has already thrown a couple of curve balls so it is too early for Boilermaker fans to start their celebrations.
