Sunday was a big day of elimination play at the adidas Super 64 and adidas Elite 36 in Las Vegas, Nev. Rivals.com got a good look at more top prospects and none were better on Sunday than 2007 prospect Nolan Smith.
To celebrate his birthday, 6-foot-2 combo guard Nolan Smith put on a scoring display in the first half of his DC Assault 16-under teams dismantling of the Long Island Lightning. Smith, one of 2007’s best prospects, nailed seven three-pointers in the first half and hit a total of 27 points. Smith’s teammate, Michael Beasley, perhaps the nations’ best prospect in the 2008 class scored 14 in the first half as the Assault ran up a 59-16 point lead at the half.
The DC Assault won the 16-under AAU Nationals in June and appear to be the team to beat in the adidas Elite 36. Both the adidas Elite 36 and the adidas Super 64 will crown a champion Monday afternoon.
Nolan Smith can play either the point or the shooting guard and can play both well. He has size 18 feet and might still be growing. He is more of a smooth athlete but can be explosive at times. With a great feel for the game, he can make all the plays.
Michael Beasley is a big time 2008 small forward prospect. The 6-foot-8 lefty has a tough jump hook inside and can go up through defenders and score. He can hit the three, although not that consistently yet, and can put it on the floor either direction.
The Michigan Mustangs played extremely well in their early game today. Here is a rundown on their top three prospects.
K’len Morris is a wing player who can run, rebound, pass, and score. He is best in transition and needs to improve his handle against pressure.
David Kool is best when making the solid play with the ball and shooting the open jumper. Not exceptionally fast or quick, but Kool is strong and knows how to keep quicker guards in front of him.
Zack Gibson is a young 2005 power forward prospect whose best basketball is ahead of him. There is a good chance he might take a redshirt year at Michigan State. He can catch the ball on the move and finish. He has a nice midrange shot, and he has developing post moves.
Senario Hillman is a top 2007 shooting guard prospect for the Atlanta Celtics. He is a freak athlete who can score. If he improves the consistency of his long range jumper, he will be an elite prospect.
Kris Thomas made four three-pointers in the second half for the Celtics. He also put the ball on the floor a couple times and pulled up for buckets.
Nick Vier and Terrell Williams played well for the Playaz Basketball Club 16-under team. Vier, a 6-foot point guard, is an above average athlete with a good shooting stroke and a very good handle. Williams, a 6-foot-7 small forward, can put the ball on the floor and get in the paint. He had a couple of nice finishes with jump hooks. Not sure what type of shooter he is, but his length and athleticism make him a very attractive prospect.
2006 prospect Matt Bouldin led the Colorado Select to an upset win over the DC Assault 17-under squad. Bouldin controlled the ball throughout the game, found the open man, and got to the basket on numerous occasions. The 6-foot-5 point guard has a great feel for the game and a vicious hesitation move.
Another very good prospect on the Colorado Select is Ryan Dermody, a 6-foot-7 small forward. Dermody shoots the ball well from the outside and can put it on the floor. He does need to gain weight, and he is more of a smooth athlete than an explosive athlete.
Playaz Basketball Club Gold has some very good 2006 prospects in Wayne Ellington and Gerald Henderson. The slender Ellington is both smooth and explosive, can shoot it from the outside, but is much better at attacking the basket, especially in transition. Henderson has a big time body and athleticism. He can stroke the three, although at times he will miss badly. He can also put it on the floor and finish in traffic.
The Right Position
Terrence Williams looked better today playing more at the small forward position instead of dominating the ball. Williams’ greatest assets are his body and his athleticism more than his skill level at this point.
