New coach Bobby Hurley and his staff at Arizona State are off to a very good start in the class of 2016. Tuesday afternoon, big man Jethro Tshisumpa became the second member of the 2016 Rivals150 to make an early commitment to the Sun Devils.
A bruising 6-foot-9, 250 pounder from Congo who plays his high school ball at Grundy (Va.) Mountain Mission School, Tshisumpa was identified as a must have target by Hurley and his coaches and they wasted little time in getting him done.
Impressive on the Adidas Uprising Circuit playing for Jazzy Hartwell's Urban DFW Elite, Tshisumpa is much more advanced on the defensive end. Not only is he big and strong, but Tshisumpa has long arms and outstanding timing. He doesn't bit on shot fakes, is quick off the floor and has good overall instincts that make him one of the premier shot blocking big men in the class of 2016.
On the offensive end, things are a different story. Tshisumpa can make a jump hook and he does a good job of running from rim to rim, but he is just starting to refine his footwork and his offense is for the most part limited to dunks and garbage baskets.
That's not necessarily a bad thing either because physically and on the defensive end, Tshisumpa is already a Pac 12 level player. His defense and ability to play with physicality will get him on the floor early while his offense gets time to improve.
Currently ranked No. 121 overall in the class of 2016, Tshisumpa joins four-star shooting guard Sam Cunliffe. Ranked No. 77 overall, Cunliffe is an athletic two guard who has deep range and lots of upside on the offensive end.
