Summers making a splash

Everybody needs a shooter, and especially one with a solid all around game and a quality attitude. Statesville (N.C.) Christian High School senior shooting guard Donald Summers fits this bill. Right now, Summers, 6-foot-3, 175-pounds, has the attention of some low and mid-majors, but look for his stock to rise as the late signing period approaches.
Summers made a splash to start this season with a 29 point outburst against heralded Oak Hill Academy. He shot a sizzling 12 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 7 shooting from the three-point line. On the season, Summers is averaging 16 points per game and leads his team with a 51 percent field goal percentage and with a 53 percent three-point percentage.

"Donald is playing really well," said Statesville Christian head coach John Jordan. "He has really picked up his game, both defensively and with his scoring. The thing that makes Donald so valuable is that he does whatever we need on a particular night. If we need to feed the post, he does it. If we need him to score, he does it."
Schools presently showing some interest are North Carolina Greensboro, Florida A&M, South Carolina State, Elon, South Florida and Buffalo, but none have offered scholarships yet.
"I'm just trying to do whatever it takes to get an offer on the table," said Summers, who has a 3.4 GPA and is an academic qualifier. "I want to get a good four year education. I don't mind going away from home but would prefer to stay on the east coast. I just want to contribute for four years."
Coach Jordan is certain that those offers will soon come.
"Once some people get in here and see him play, Donald will sell himself," said Jordan. "He is the poster child of what a college program would want to be about because of his work ethic and his consistency."
